Chris Cockburn’s Pottery

Chris has made pottery for over two decades and the following photographs show something of the range of his work. These items are not for sale, but Chris would be happy to take on commissions as he has a good range of skills in this medium.

These days, much of his efforts go into tile making. His bathroom wall is covered with 12″ x 12″ slight ‘bass relief’ tiles made by pressing partially cut linos from his printing into slabs of clay. The images are then decorated with underglaze pigments, then sprayed with a shiny clear glaze, then fired.

Picture-framing ‘D’ rings are ‘araldited’ to the back of each tile, then it is fixed to the wall. Many of these tiles are also on his wooden garden fence. Chris’ tiles are earthenware fired, which is the lower firing temperature, so they may be frost susceptible. To counter this, each tile is given two coats of PVA glue diluted to 50% with water, thus sealing them.

The artist has also made a series of ‘worm-cast’ pots for his garden, in which he grows plants. These pots are frost resistant, since they are fired to a higher (stoneware) temperature.

Chris is now working on small (approx 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″) very delicately painted tiles to combine with mosaics to produce a couple of coffee table tops, and also a large fire surround for his home.
