The Artist, Christopher Graham Cockburn

Chris was born in 1952 and spent his formative years in Sheffield, Worksop (North Nottinghamshire) and Doncaster, where he developed a life-long interest in all aspects of Natural History, Art and Science.

When 18, he moved to London to read Zoology at Imperial College; shortly afterwards retraining in Biochemistry at the same university.

Chris worked as a Biochemist in medical research in London, North Carolina and Cambridge (UK). In between research grants, Chris would usually travel to remote places around the globe to look at the animals and natural environments, indulging his interest in the world of nature, which is often reflected in his artwork.

In midlife, Chris reinvented himself as an artist, after completing a Foundation Course in Art and Design at the City Lit., London. Later, he studied a wide range of artistic disciplines in various adult education centres, and now specialises in stained glass, pottery and printmaking.

Chris’ artwork has developed over the years and his later creations can be highly unusual in that they incorporate natural, translucent and unstained mineral slices (mostly agates). These slices tend to look very different in the day when light shines through them, as opposed to the hours of darkness, when light is reflected from them.

Where possible, Chris donates to his charity of choice, Fotokids – The Original!! This organisation provides an education plus food to street children in Guatemala, thus breaking the cycle of poverty.

Only 3% of the money that this award winning charity receives goes on ‘administration’ costs, making it highly unusual, and one of the reasons for receiving the artist’s support.

Chris not only loves designing, creating and delivering his stained glass windows; he hopes to bring you this very same feeling of happiness through the natural use of sunlight being split into streaming coloured rays, which continually change with the seasons.
